WESTERN CANADA WILDLIFE – September 2014 and 2018
The 2014 trip lasted nearly three weeks in total. We started at Calgary (with extensive snow and blizzards), proceeded to Banff and then went to Jasper. We then got the train to Vancouver (Rocky Mountaineer), stopping over at Kamloops. Next we went to Victoria (Vancouver Island) and on to Tofino (west coast), Hidden Cove (Telegraph Cove) and Port Hardy (both east side). From PH we went to Great Bear Lodge (a short flight north and back on mainland) before returning via PH to Vancouver. Throughout the scenery was stunning.
The 2018 trip started at the end of August in Vancouver. The following day we went to Vancouver Island (west coast), staying at Tofino (poor weather) for two days. We then went to the east coast – Courtenay (good for birds), Hidden Cove and Telegraph Cove. Next we went to Berry Island with a series of outings looking for Bears and Whales (birds and whales being placed in separate galleries). Our final stop was intended to be Campbell River but unfortunately problems with the hotel’s plumbing caused us to stay at Courtenay (again) for the final two days.
SEPTEMBER 2014: This gallery deals with wildlife, excluding birds and whales (Humpback and Orca) which have their own galleries. Black Bears (single boat trip from Tofino, photos from boat) and Grizzly Bears (a few trips near to Great Bear Lodge) are given special attention. Others species include: Coyote, White-tailed Deer, Elk, Sea Otter, American Pica, Northern (Steller) Sea Lion, Harbour Seal, Bighorn Sheep, American Red Squirrel, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel, Saffron-winged Meadowhawk dragonfly, Spotted Tussock moth caterpillar and Mourning Cloak (Camberwell Beauty in EU) butterfly.
SEPTEMBER 2018: The various animal photos are being added to the 2014 gallery with bears (black and grizzly) again getting special treatment. The whales will continue with their own gallery. The Black Bears have file numbers 41 to 72 and the Grizzlies, 51 to 97. File numbers of remaining new animals are as follows: Deer, White-tailed 21 to 24. Otter, Sea 21 to 28. Sea Lion, Northern (Steller) 31 to 43. Seal, Harbour 31 to 42.
